In February, Alene was approached by colleagues who asked if she would consider
running for Edmonton Catholic School Trustee. She spent some time praying and
discerning before she made her decision.
After being involved with Education for 27 years, Catholic Education was near and
dear to her heart. In her roles over the years, she worked very hard to evangelize
staff, students and parents by planning and providing faith days, professional
development and retreats.
Alene found it very disturbing that trustees on Edmonton Catholic School Board
could not work together cohesively to promote Catholic Education for the success
of all students.
The dissension and conflict between some board members was giving the public a
negative impression of Edmonton Catholic School Board and the Catholic
Community.
This dissension has caused people to question the need for two school
systems.
In Alberta, Catholics have the right to a publicly funded Catholic education system
and we must not become complacent and take it for granted. We must work
together to keep Catholic Education.
After meeting and talking with former trustees, clergy and friends, Alene decided
that because of her background and education and dedication to Catholic Education,
she has good qualifications to run as a candidate for Edmonton Catholic School
Trustee.
Alene Mutala knows the importance of governance and school policies and will
work at building a cohesive unified board with one voice speaking for Catholic
Education and the mission and teachings of the Catholic Church.
